National Volunteer Week

It is currently National Volunteer Week, and we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the volunteers who make up a significant part of the greater Middleton Place Foundation community. Our nearly 250 volunteers are responsible for guiding our guests through Middleton Place and the Edmondston-Alston House, as well as maintaining the historic grounds of Middleton Place. We would like to thank each and every one of our volunteers for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to our educational mission, which is to “connect to the past and inspire a better future.

“We appreciate your significant contribution, not just on Volunteer Appreciation Day, but every day of the year. Gwen Lindhorst, Volunteer Program Manager for the Foundation, shared, “Our volunteers have a huge impact on our not-for-profit foundation, contributing over 20,000 service hours. They fill many roles, from providing historical interpretation, helping beautify the gardens, and working with school groups, to maintenance in the stableyards, proofreading, book cataloging, and lending a hand with special events. I have witnessed firsthand how the time and talents of our volunteers make the visitor experience at Middleton Place and the Edmondston-Alston House such a positive one.”

As the Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary by highlighting its stewardship of this National Historic Landmark, it must also acknowledge and honor the fact that volunteers played a crucial role in the first guided tours of the Middleton Place Gardens, House Museum, and Stableyards, as well as in the cleanup efforts after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Their ongoing dedication continues to welcome guests from around the world every day to Middleton Place and the Edmondston-Alston House, connecting our past to our present and future.
