About the Farm
The Farm at Middleton Place uses regenerative practices that go beyond organic. With a working knowledge of historic agricultural methods, such as the use of livestock and plant waste to increase soil fertility, the farm focuses on a full-circle approach to production. Spent hay from our heritage livestock breeds is used to enrich the soil and to cultivate plants that are used to create flavorful dishes in our restaurant. After that, the unusable parts of those plants are used to make compost, which is then fed to new plants. Perennial and annual flowers not only create a beautiful tablescape at the restaurant and events but also invite pollinators and beneficial insects to the farm, which helps to eliminate the need for harmful pesticides. Crop rotation, cover crops and reduced tilling strategies help to create biodiversity in the soil which creates a stronger, healthier, better-tasting plant that doesn’t need the assistance of synthetic chemicals.
