Rice & Slavery: The Connection That Made the Low Country

The knowledge and expertise of enslaved Africans and African-Americans made rice both an economic and cultural staple in the Low Country.  Interpreters will be on hand to discuss the planting, cultivating, harvesting, and processing of Carolina Gold Rice, as well as its impact on the  18th and 19th Century in South Carolina.

 

All Day Programming / Hands-On Activities

11:00am  – 3:00pm

Interpreters will be on hand to discuss the planting, cultivating, harvesting, and  processing of Rice.  Guests may participate in such hands-on activities as threshing, pounding, and fanning rice.
