  • VOLUNTEER & INTERPRETIVE COORDINATOR, Edmondston-Alston House

    Volunteer & Interpretive Coordinator, Edmondston-Alston House Museum

    40 hours/week

    Tuesday-Saturday

     

    An integral member of our team, the Volunteer & Interpretive Coordinator’s main responsibilities are scheduling our volunteers and staff, managing the interpretive program at the Edmondston-Alston House, overseeing care of collection, and assisting the house museum manager in day-to-day operations, including assuming management responsibilities in the manager’s absence.

     

    Essential job functions:

    • Responsible for all volunteer communication including monthly scheduling of volunteers; create and distribute timely correspondence; keep accurate records of participation.
    • Gain and maintain a strong knowledge basis of the Edmondston-Alston House’s history and operating procedures.
    • In conjunction with the House Museum Manager and the Director of Preservation and Interpretation, research, develop, design, and implement interpretive content, tours and programs.
    • Oversee volunteer qualification, train volunteers on best practices and skills that engage and educate our visitors in a way that adheres with the Foundation’s standards.
    • Serve as front-line management to the public; share front of house desk duties, security and opening/closing procedures with museum manager; stay abreast and inform others of any new procedural changes; communicate issues, questions, and concerns to manager in a timely manner.
    • Responsible for routine collections care of historic structure and its contents (oversee the condition and movement of decorative objects and furniture, identify needs for conservation, maintain proper documentation)
    • Conduct public and private tours as needed; assist with coordinating tour groups and special evening programming/events.
    • Professionally represent Middleton Place Foundation when hosting volunteer orientations and attending recruitment and community events to attract qualified candidates.
    • General daily housekeeping and maintenance duties as needed.

     

     

    Required Skills and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies or related field
    • 1 year of related job experience; working in a museum or managing a volunteer program preferred
    • A team player who works well with a diverse group of staff and volunteers
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Proficient computer skills and experience with social media platforms
    • Maintain a calm, professional demeanor when dealing with difficult or emergency situations
    • Willingness to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the job
    • Ability to stand for more than 30 minutes, climb stairs several times daily and to lift and carry 25 lbs.

  • CARRIAGE DRIVER/STABLE HAND

    Tell the story of Middleton Place, National Historic Landmark, while driving a team of Belgian horses and provide care and maintenance of a variety of animals in the Living History Plantation Stableyards.

    Key areas of responsibility

    • Lead a horse-driven carriage while telling the story of Middleton Place
    • General care and feeding of horses and other Stableyard animals
    • Cross-train to assist in general barn maintenance
    • Perform other duties as needed including work with horses, water buffalo, sheep, hogs, and more.

    Qualifications

    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Experience working in a stable or barn environment or with animals is a plus, but not required. We will train you.
    • Ability to clearly communicate with guests while driving a carriage
    • Strong work ethic
    • Willingness to work as a team
    • Stamina for working outside in changing weather conditions
    • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • MAINTENANCE WORKER

    Join the maintenance team at this historic landmark. Perform a variety of routine and semi-skilled tasks involving general maintenance, including: painting, electrical repairs, plumbing, roof repairs, and routine carpentry work.

    This entry level, full-time position requires a dependable individual with two years or more of working in the field. Must have valid SC driver’s license and reliable transportation. Good benefits.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the Job (listed in order of importance):

    • Assist in routine building/system repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting
    • Assist in road and drainage maintenance
    • Maintain and secure Maintenance Department equipment and workshops, sheds, and materials

    MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Assist as needed with property-wide events
    • Assist as needed with property-wide security

    Skills Required to Perform the Duties of the Job:

    • Proficient knowledge of all building trades and equipment maintenance
    • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
    • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks

    Educational Requirements Needed to Perform the Duties of the Job:

    • Technical training in Building/Equipment Trades or equivalent work experience
    • High School Diploma

    Weight Lifting (or other physical) Requirements to Perform the Duties of the Job:

    • 50 pounds routinely
    • Ability to move all extremities, stand for 2 or more hours, bend and stoop without pain or impairment.

    Licensing or Other Special Certifications Required:

    • Valid S.C. Driver’s license.
