  • Museum Shop Retail Sales Associate

    Job description

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the Job (listed in order of importance):

    1. Build a knowledge base of items sold to engage customers in conversation about products, artists, and plant materials.

    2. Interact with visitors in a friendly, helpful manner.

    3. Be fully competent in the operation of the point-of-sale systems and credit card machines.

    4. Perform opening and closing functions with accuracy to report daily sales, banks, and deposits.

  • VOLUNTEER & INTERPRETIVE COORDINATOR, Edmondston-Alston House

    Volunteer & Interpretive Coordinator, Edmondston-Alston House Museum

    40 hours/week

    Tuesday-Saturday

    An integral member of our team, the Volunteer & Interpretive Coordinator’s main responsibilities are scheduling our volunteers and staff, managing the interpretive program at the Edmondston-Alston House, overseeing the care of the collection, and assisting the house museum manager in day-to-day operations, including assuming management responsibilities in the manager’s absence.

    Essential job functions:

    • Responsible for all volunteer communication including monthly scheduling of volunteers; distributing timely correspondence; maintaining accurate records of participation; training volunteers on best practices and skills that engage and educate our visitors in ways that adhere to the Foundation’s standards.
    • Serve as front-line management to the public; learn desk duties and point of sale system, collections care / housekeeping duties, opening and closing procedures; stay abreast of any new procedural changes and inform others.
    • Gain and maintain a strong knowledge basis of the EA House’s history and conduct tours for the public as needed.
    • In conjunction with the Director of Preservation and Interpretation and the House Manager, research, develop, design, and implement advancements to interpretive content and programs.
    • Conduct semi-annual prospective volunteer orientations and oversee volunteer qualification; professionally represent Middleton Place Foundation when attending recruitment events.
    • Assist with annual maintenance, disaster preparedness, Christmas events, and evening events.

     

    Required Skills and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies or related field
    • 1 year of related job experience
    • A friendly team player who works well with a diverse group
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Proficient computer skills and experience with social media platforms

  • BLACKSMITH HISTORIC INTERPRETER

    An integral member of the Middleton Place Stableyards Interpretive Team, the Blacksmith Historic Interpreter’s main responsibilities involve the daily operation of the Blacksmith Shop, demonstrating period blacksmithing using a variety of tools and equipment, and interpreting the role that both free and enslaved blacksmiths performed during the 18th and 19th centuries.

    Previous experience as a historic interpreter and in teaching children, youth, and/or adults is considered an asset.  Experience in blacksmith is not a prerequisite.  Informal and formal training is available.

    The position is open immediately.  This is a full or part-time position.  Weekdays and some weekends are required.

  • MANAGER OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORIC INTERPRETATION

    An integral team member of the Middleton Place Foundation, the Manager of African American Historic Interpretation’s main responsibilities will be overseeing and implementing programs on the historical interpretation of a Low Country rice plantation and assisting the Director of Preservation and Interpretation with revising and strengthening the historic site’s current exhibits, programs and tours to better express and represent inclusive American history.  The manager will also work site-wide developing best practices and conducting training sessions on the interpretation of the difficult topic of slavery.

  • CARRIAGE DRIVER/STABLE HAND

    Tell the story of Middleton Place, National Historic Landmark, while driving a team of Belgian horses and provide care and maintenance of a variety of animals in the Living History Plantation Stableyards.

    Key areas of responsibility

    • Lead a horse-driven carriage while telling the story of Middleton Place
    • General care and feeding of horses and other Stableyard animals
    • Cross-train to assist in general barn maintenance
    • Perform other duties as needed including work with horses, water buffalo, sheep, hogs, and more.

    Qualifications

    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Experience working in a stable or barn environment or with animals is a plus, but not required. We will train you.
