Join us for an engaging Spring Family Day at Middleton Place! Experience a blend of historic and modern practices in livestock, agriculture and more as you explore exciting demonstrations alongside hands-on activities that connect past techniques with contemporary methods. This fun and educational event offers something for everyone, making it a perfect day for families of all ages.

Free for members, included with General Admission. Children aged 14 and under can attend for free.

 

Border Collie Demonstrations:

Red Creek Farm will be onsite for their thrilling duck and sheep herding demonstrations. Watch these incredible dogs in action as they showcase their talent and teamwork in an unforgettable experience.

Horse Trimming:

Middleton Place’s farrier from Fox and Cedar Farm will be here to trim our American Belgian Draft Horses, join us to learn what goes into their hoof care.

Ducks and Chicks:

Come meet the adorable ducks and chicks from Barnyard Feed and Supply! Get up close and personal with these fluffy little bundles of joy.

Cheese Making:

Jeremiah Farm & Goat Dairy owner, Casey Price, will lead a demonstration on how easy it is to make fresh cheese using her Grade A goat’s milk.

Hay Rides:

Hop on for an adventure on a tractor-pulled hayride, offering stunning views of the majestic oaks and lush greensward. It’s a thrilling ride the whole family will enjoy, especially the kids!

African Seed Exchange Presents: Seeds of Heritage:

Follow us on a journey of discovery regarding interesting facts about the vegetables grown in the African Seed Exchange Garden at Middleton Place. Participate in a round of gardening challenge questions, and take home a small biodegradable pot and pack of vegetable seeds to harvest history in your home garden.

Colonial Games:

Colonial games offer a fun and educational way for families to experience the past together. Families can participate in games like spinning tops, 9 pins, and more, which were popular in the colonial period.

What in the World”:

Discover the fascinating objects tied to African superstitions, including brooms, bottle trees, buttons, shells, horseshoes, salt, feathers, and more. Each item carries its own unique cultural significance and belief, offering a captivating glimpse into African traditions and spiritual practices.

Yellow and pink natural dyeing:

Explore the historic techniques of coloring fabrics using natural materials. This hands-on experience not only teaches about sustainable practices but also offers a fascinating look into how people in history created beautiful, vibrant textiles.

Animal Clay Molds:

This hands-on activity allows individuals of all ages to explore their artistic side while learning about different animals. Using simple tools and techniques, families can create their own animal figures by pressing the clay into animal-shaped molds.

Archaeology:

Guests will participate in a mock archaeological excavation to recognize the importance of artifacts to better understand the past. You will have the opportunity to take home your findings and complete an archaeological field journal.

Wool Carding:

During this activity, participants will have the opportunity to brush and fluff the wool fibers from our sheep. Wool carding allows families to experience an important step in traditional textile making, providing connection to historical crafting practices.
