Tangled Up In Blue: Indigo Dyeing

March 23 |10:00am -4:00pm

Indigo, a plant that produces a blue dye, was an important part of South Carolina’s 18th-century economy. Indigo dye work was time-consuming – and often smelly! The precise science required for the oxidation that produces the unique blue that only comes from indigo speaks to the brilliance of the women who developed this technology, and the enslaved people who enacted it.

Using a prepared indigo vat, interpreters from the textile shop will be dyeing skeins of wool shorn from the Middleton Place Sheep.  (Included in general admission)
