About the film:
On land first settled in the early colonial period, Middleton Place has, since 1741, served as the family seat for generations of the Middleton family including a President of the First Continental Congress, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, a Governor of South Carolina and Minister to Russia, and a Signer of the Ordinance of Secession. After the Civil War, Middleton Place was neglected for decades until a descendant, J.J. Pringle Smith, and his wife Heningham Ellett Smith, began its restoration in the 1920s.

Middleton Place A Phoenix Still Rising brings history to life through early American landscape architecture in the Gardens, extraordinary family-owned decorative and fine art in the House Museum, historic livestock breeds and authentically costumed interpreters in the Plantation Stableyards. Narrators Martha Teichner, CBS News correspondent, and Charles Duell, Middleton Place Foundation President, whose grandchildren are 12th generation descendants of the first Middletons to leave England and settle in Carolina, invite viewers to discover the prodigious significance of this National Historic Landmark.
