Celebrating Camellias at Middleton Place Virtual Workshop

February 4, 2021 | 11:00am

Sidney Frazier, VP of Horticulture, has dedicated over 45 years to overseeing the care of the oldest landscaped gardens in America at Middleton Place.  This is the time of year when camellias take center stage, providing vibrant color in cold winter months. The camellias at Middleton Place are special because they are some of the oldest in America, first planted on Henry Middleton’s parterre in the late 18th century.

This special annual presentation by the horticulturalist dubbed “The King of Camellias” will cover several aspects of the camellia plant, from its origins in Asia and its various forms to its care and maintenance. Expect expert advice in planting, water, pruning, fertilizing, propagating, and disease identification and eradication.

Space is limited and reservations are required to the ZOOM virtual workshop.

Middleton Place Foundation
Sidney Charles Frazier began his career at Middleton Place in 1974 as a garden helper, and for the next eight years studied and learned the care, maintenance, and importance of preserving historic landscaped gardens. In 1982 he was appointed the Director of Horticulture/Gardens Management. While working at the plantation, Frazier earned his degree in horticulture at Trident Technical College in Charleston, SC. He is responsible for the total maintenance of the 110 acre 18th century plantation which encompasses America’s oldest landscaped gardens. He oversees the planting and growth of all trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals, including pruning, fertilizing, and spraying done by eight full-time gardeners he has trained. Frazier has successfully propagated many camellia cultivars, including Middleton’s oldest surviving camellia plant the “Reine des Fleurs”, using air layering. Thanks to these efforts, many propagated camellias are available for purchase at the Middleton Place nursery.
