The Marsh at Middleton Kayak Tour

The 2 hour event begins with a safety instruction before paddling out with a trained naturalist to the tidal creeks. The historic Ashley River is a South Carolina designated Scenic River Corridor. The friendly and knowledgeable guide will interpret the flora, fauna, rice production, and the historical importance of the river. Participants can choose between a stable and comfortable tandem (2 person) kayak, or a single kayak.

Blackwater Cypress Swamp Tour

The three hour event will begin with basic safety and paddling instruction before heading deep within a tupelo and cypress filled forest. Explore the magical 1,100-acre cypress swamp and discover plants and animals that thrive under the 120-ft. tall trees. Paddle between the trees and through the cypress "knee gardens" on this laid back tour in stable tandem kayaks. Seasonal tour dependent on water levels.

Marsh Ecology School Group Kayaking Program

A trained naturalist will give basic safety and paddling instruction before leading student trips (ages 12-18) through the tidal creeks that feed the pristine marshlands around the Ashley River. Friendly and knowledgeable guides interpret the ecology of the tidal estuary. Programs will be designed to fit the appropriate age level of participants. Topics discussed will range from water quality, flora and fauna to organic production and filtration of this incredibly important ecosystem.

Self Guided Kayak Rentals

Explore the Ashley River and its adjacent tidal creeks at your own pace. The naturalist guide provides a safety orientation, paddle technique, all the safety gear, and helps you launch the kayak for a self-guided trip. The tandem kayaks are stable and ensure a safe time on the water. Single kayaks may be available for those proficient with a basic self-rescue, or for odd number parties with at least one tandem kayak. Advance reservations strongly recommended.

Naturalist Guided Group Walks

Join one of the trained naturalists on a guided walk around one of the many trails at Middleton Place. Walk around one of the old rice fields that provides rich habitat for wading birds, raptors, migratory waterfowl, American alligators and much more. Learn about native plants and the diverse eco-systems that can be found. Get a glimpse into the past as the guide interprets the history of the rice culture so entrenched in the Low Country's history. The tour lasts approximately one hour. Reservations required. Minimums may be required.
