On land first settled in the early colonial period, Middleton Place has, since 1741, served as the family seat for generations of the Middleton family including a President of the First Continental Congress, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, a Governor of South Carolina and Minister to Russia, and a Signer of the Ordinance of Secession. After the Civil War, Middleton Place was neglected for decades until a descendant, J.J. Pringle Smith, and his wife Heningham Ellett Smith, began its restoration in the 1920s.
Middleton Place A Phoenix Still Rising brings the history of this singular family and this extraordinary property to life. See the Gardens as they looked centuries ago, important family-owned art treasures, heritage livestock breeds, and authentically costumed interpreters at work in the Plantation Stableyards. The film in narrated by CBS News Corresponent, Martha Teichner, and Middleton Place Foundation President, Charles Duell, whose grandchildren are 12th generation descendants of the first Middletons to leave England and settle in Carolina.
