About the Pattern
Clothes or Blanket Chest, Walnut and Cedar inlaid with brass, English, late 18th century
Brass ornamented chests like the one in the Middleton Place House Museum were made in England between the 1730s and early 1800s. The brass ornament, as seen on the hand towel pattern, consists of elaborately detailed bellflowers aligned to form a cross or reflect the four points of a compass. The bellflowers were a popular style motif for the late 18th and early 19th century furniture.
