This entry level, full time position with benefits requires a dependable individual with 2 years of experience in the horticulture field. Valid South Carolina driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the Job (listed in order of importance):

  • Detailing and maintaining Gardens
  • Greenhouse and Nursery work


  • Soil conditioning, organic fertilization and amendment
  • Weeding & mulching
  • Light pest and disease control
  • Managing watering and irrigation systems and watering plants
  • Planting & transplanting (Seasonally)
  • Raking, spraying, fertilizing and pruning
  • Mixing soil
  • Moving containers

General Maintenance Worker

Middleton Place, National Historic Landmark, seeks a Full-Time General Maintenance Worker to assist in grounds/building maintenance. Perform work that requires general carpentry skills, general plumbing skills and general electrical skills.


  • General working knowledge of carpentry.s
  • General working knowledge of plumbing.
  • General working Knowledge of electricity.
  • General working knowledge of preventative maintenance.


The essential function of the General Maintenance Worker is to respond to maintenance work orders, make repairs and perform preventative maintenance as well. Must be able to perform major life activities: standing, lifting, bending, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking and communicating.

  • Must be able to lift and/or carry 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand for 7 hours, bend, stretch, reach, climb ladders, crawl, kneel and be low to the ground when necessary, sometimes for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to see and hear.
  • Must be able to speak and read English, the ability to communicate in another language may be helpful.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must display professionalism, honesty and trustworthiness at all times.


  • Assist as needed with all special events
  • Assist as needed with property-wide security
  • Assist as needed with animal control


  • The methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in a variety of building and mechanical trades.
  • Occupational hazards in the use of power tools and equipment, and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Repairs and maintenance of furniture and fixtures within the hotel.
  • Safety and security measures. Report or correct any hazardous conditions observed immediately.
  • Guidelines for training checklist of areas to be maintained.


  • Follow the company procedures and policies.
  • Use and care of hand and power tools and equipment appropriate to the area assignment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs as well as general maintenance on property grounds.
  • Assist with guest issues, be professional and maintain a caring attitude.


  • Respond to all maintenance work orders in a timely manner.
  • Perform general minor repairs to in house carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to diagnose malfunctions and defects in mechanical and similar equipment and to determine adequate corrective measures.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and upper management.
  • Practice safety standards at all times.
  • Must be able to work as a team member.
  • Comply to all standards.
  • Remain service centric.
  • Communicate professionally with guests and co-workers.


  • Maintain grounds and buildings using consistent preventative maintenance guidelines.
  • Ensure all maintenance equipment is in working order.
  • Perform tasks as assigned: preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • All other duties as assigned and within the realm of physical capabilities.


  • Valid S.C. Driver's license.


  • Standing, bending, stretching, walking for long periods of time.

  • Work days are Monday-Friday, weekends off.
  • Some computer skills required.

Carriage Driver/Stable Hand

Tell the story of Middleton Place, National Historic Landmark, while driving a team of Belgian horses and provide care and maintenance of a variety of animals in the Living History Plantation Stableyards.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Lead a horse-driven carriage while telling the story of Middleton Place
  • General care and feeding of horses and other Stableyard animals
  • Cross-train to assist in general barn maintenance
  • Perform other duties as needed including work with horses, water buffalo, sheep, hogs, and more.


  • Experience working in a stable or barn environment or with animals is a plus, but not required. We will train you.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with guests while driving a carriage
  • Strong work ethic
  • Willingness to work as a team
  • Stamina for working outside in changing weather conditions

Terms of employment

  • FULL-TIME with flexible schedule (weekends required)
  • Must have a valid SC driver’s license and reliable transportation
